Hampton Roads, Virginia

To colonial sea captains the New World's waterways were highways, and they named Virginia's 'Hampton Roads.'

Today, tug boats, container barges, cruise ships and Navy battleships ply one of the world's most strategic harbors, the same waters three small ships sailed in 1607.

Hampton Roads' 10 cities range from a sea of umbrellas along the Virginia Beach Oceanfront up rivers to Colonial seaports and vibrant cities.

History is acted out daily from its beginnings at Jamestown, through the middle Colonial period at Williamsburg, to the birth of a nation at Yorktown.
